Oxygen high level laser therapy is efficient in treatment of chronic periodontitis: a clinical and microbiological study using PCR analysis.

After the treatment, a remarkable decrease in bacteria amount, both for eachspecies and for total bacteria was observed except for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis demonstrating that this laser protocol is effective on periodontitis treatment. OHLLT is efficient in treatment of chronic periodontitis as demonstrated by clinical and microbiological parameters, going beyond the traditional periodontal therapy.

Scope of photodynamic therapy in periodontics.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a powerful laser-initiated photochemical reaction, involving the use of a photoactive dye (photosensitizer) activated by light of a specific wavelength in the presence of oxygen. Application of PDT in periodontics such as pocket debridement, gingivitis, and aggressive periodontitis continue to evolve into a mature clinical treatment modality and is considered as a promising novel approach for eradicating pathogenic bacteria in periodontitis.

Effects of a 980nm Diode Laser as an Adjunct to Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy on Periodontal Status and Inflammatory Markers in Patients After Myocardial Infarction

Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that in the nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis with patients after MI, the additional use of diode laser enables greater reduction of PPD in pockets ‡7 mm.
